Confused by the massive price differences between various extensions

I’ve been shopping around for a name and I am seeing prices ranging from $10 to over $2,000 for what looks like the same word with different endings. I don't understand why a .com is so much more expensive than a .xyz or a .net in some cases, or why some sites charge hidden fees at checkout. It is very hard to budget for a new website when the costs are so inconsistent across the board. Can someone explain how to find the most stable pricing and avoid overpaying for a basic registration?

The world of web addresses can be very confusing because different registries have different rules for their domain prices and how they handle renewals. Generally, the more "popular" an extension is, the higher the demand and the potential for premium pricing on short words. It helps to use a search tool that shows you the total cost of ownership upfront so you aren't surprised by any hidden charges later on. Once you see the full picture, it becomes much easier to choose an option that fits your long-term budget. You should take a look at a few comparison charts to see the current market rates.
